Tools for Communication Newborn Screening Results
The Education Workgroup, a collaboration between NewSTEPs and Expecting Health, is pleased to share two new resources designed to support healthcare professionals and follow-up staff in communicating newborn screening results with families.
These quick-reference implementation tools were developed for primary care providers and others who disclose newborn screening results. They provide practical language communication tips to support clear, compassionate, and family-centered conversations while promoting family understanding, trust, and timely follow-up.
- Quick Reference Card: Tips for Communicating Newborn Screening Results: A concise reference card featuring key communication principles, suggested language, common pitfalls to avoid, and a results disclosure checklist.
- Pocket Guide for Communicating Newborn Screening Results: A step-by-step guide with practical phrases, conversation tips, and examples of language to avoid when discussing newborn screening results with families.
These resources are intended to serve as practical, at-a-glance tools for use in clinical practice. For a more comprehensive discussion of best practices for communicating newborn screening results, we also encourage you to review the Newborn Screening Information Center's Guide to Communicating Out-of-Range Newborn Screening Results.
We encourage newborn screening programs to share these resources with pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, genetic counselors, specialists, follow-up staff, and others involved in communicating newborn screening results.
